What are Flying Geese?

If you're a quilting enthusiast, you've probably heard of flying geese. They are a popular quilt block pattern that resembles a flock of geese flying in formation. Traditionally, flying geese blocks are made by sewing together a large triangle and two smaller triangles. However, this method often results in fabric waste. In this tutorial, we will learn how to sew flying geese without any waste.

Cutting Guide

Before sewing, use the guide for cutting your fabric.

Sewing Instructions 🪡

1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each of the Fabric B pieces. With RST, place two fabric B squares on the fabric A square (Fig. 1). Pin and sew a scant 1/4 inch from either side of the line, then cut on the line you drew. (Fig. 2) Press seams to fabric B.
2. Place one fabric B piece RST on the block as shown in Fig. 3. Sew a scant 1/4 inch from either side of the line. Then cut apart on the line you drew. (Fig. 4) Press seam to fabric B.
3. Repeat step 2 on the remaining piece. Press the 4 completed geese toward fabric B. Trim the ears on all 4 pieces and your flying geese are complete.

Sewing no waste flying geese blocks is a fantastic way to reduce fabric waste while creating beautiful quilt patterns. By following this tutorial, you can easily sew flying geese blocks without any leftover scraps. Happy quilting!
