What You'll Need

Before we dive into the tutorial, let's gather all the necessary materials:

  • Fabric: Choose two prints on contrasting value.
  • Ruler
  • Rotary Cutter
  • Cutting Mat
  • Sewing Machine
  • Thread: Select a thread color that complements your fabric choices.
  • Pins
  • Iron

Step 1: Cutting the Fabric

Start by cutting the fabric into the required pieces. To make one Annie's Choice quilt block, you will need:

  • Two 9-inch squares of background fabric
  • Two 9-inch squares of color fabric

Using your ruler and rotary cutter, carefully measure and cut the fabric according to these dimensions.

Step 2: Creating Half Square Triangles

Next, it's time to create the half square triangles that form the central design of the Annie's Choice block. Since we need a total of 16 HST's we'll use the 8 at a time method.

Take one pair of 9-inch squares (one background fabric and one color fabric) and place them right sides together and mark the centre of each side of your fabric. (Always test your marking pen on a piece of scrap fabric before you use it on your project)

Draw 4 diagonal lines attaching each point together. You should have a giant square in your fabric as shown in the HST downloadable pattern card.

Sew on either side of the lines, using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Iron the fabric then cut the block in half vertically and horizontally, then on the diagonal lines you made to create 8 HST's. Press the blocks open or towards the darker fabric and trim to 3-1/2 Inches.

Repeat on the remaining pair of of 9-inch squares to create a total of 16 HST's.

Step 3: Assembling the Block

With the half square triangles pressed and trimmed, it's time to assemble the Annie's Choice quilt block. Lay out the fabric pieces according to the Diagram Below:

Sew the HST's together in rows, then sew the rows together.

Press the seams open or towards the center.

Step 4: Finishing Touches

Once your block is complete, give it a final press to ensure all the seams are flat and crisp. Trim any excess threads or uneven edges.

Now you can incorporate your Annie's Choice quilt block into your next quilting project! Combine multiple blocks to create a stunning quilt, or use it as a focal point in a smaller project like a pillow case or tote bag.

Remember, practice makes perfect. Don't be discouraged if your first attempt isn't flawless. With each block you make, you'll refine your skills and create something truly beautiful. So enjoy the process, embrace your creativity, and have fun making your own Annie's Choice quilt block!

I’ve recently purchased some older issues of various quilting magazines and came upon a pattern that I’d really like to make. All I can see from the page is it’s called Annie’s First Choice.?it seems to be a quilt top of rows of squares and rows of rectangles and alternating squares. If you could help me in locating this pattern I’d appreciate it greatly!! Thank you, DD
