Want to know a secret to becoming a quilting pro? It's all about mastering the Half Square Triangle! Not only is it a basic block that every quilter should know, but it's also incredibly versatile. Trust us, once you learn this block, you'll feel like a quilting superhero. And the best part? It's perfect for beginners! So, let's dive in and learn how to make this block, and we'll even share some tips and tricks to make it a breeze. Ready, set, sew!

There are lots of different ways to create a HST (half square triangle). Today we're going to cover two of the most popular methods: the two at a time and eight at a time. If you're just starting out, the two at a time method is the way to go. It's easier to manage and you won't have as many blocks or stitches to worry about. But, if you're a HST-making machine and need to crank out a bunch for a project, the eight at a time method is the way to go.

You can download the free pattern card for making two at a time, and eight at a time HST here.

Two at a Time

For the two at a time method you'll need your fabric pre-cut to size. You can refer to the chart below to figure out what size you'll need to cut your squares.

Place your good sides together and draw a diagonal line using an erasable marking pen starting from the top left corner to the bottom right corner. (Always test your marking pen on a piece of scrap fabric before you use it on your project).

Sew on either side of the line, using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Iron the fabric then cut on the diagonal line you made. Press the blocks open and you're done!

Eight at a Time

For the eight at a time method you'll again need your fabric pre-cut to size. You can refer to the chart below to figure out what size you'll need to cut your squares.

Place your fabric good sides together and mark the centre of each side of your fabric. (Always test your marking pen on a piece of scrap fabric before you use it on your project) Draw 4 diagonal lines attaching each point together. You should have a giant square in your fabric as shown in the downloadable pattern card.

Sew on either side of the lines, using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Iron the fabric then cut the block in half vertically and horizontally, then on the diagonal lines you made. Press the blocks open and you're done!
